I Wonder
When the first shrill cry of a babe
rang out from Bethlehem’s stable,
was he crying from the trauma
of a painful childbirth…
or was it the mournful wail of one
already aware of his painful
predestined fate?
When Mary first held him to her breast,
did he suckle from a newborn’s
natural hunger for life,
or was it for the comfort
and fulfillment he could give her now,
knowing she would find no comfort
in the fulfillment of his death?
